Clear the platter

Sweep up every fragment on the disk. Four corrupted processes are loose in the tracks — grab a defrag tool in one of the corners and for a few seconds they are yours instead. Five platters come round in turn.

What is on the platter

There are no levels to finish. Five different platters come round in turn, and once you have cleared all five it starts again with quicker processes and shorter tool time, so the run only ends when your three read heads are gone.

Fragments

The scattered pieces of files left across the disk. Collect every one of them and the pass is complete.

10 points each
Defrag tool

One in each corner. Pick one up and the processes turn blue and run from you for a few seconds — chase them down while they do.

Corrupted processes

Four of them, each with its own habit. One follows you directly, one cuts you off ahead, one hangs back until you get close, and one wanders.

Touch one and you lose a head
The side channel

The corridor through the middle of the platter runs off one edge and back in the other. Good for shaking off a process that is right behind you.

Chained catches

Catching more than one process on the same tool is where the score is. They pay double each time until the tool runs out.

Spare parts

Every so often a component drops into the middle track and sits there for a few seconds. A memory stick is straight points, a drive speeds your head up, a case fan cools the processes down, and a graphics card doubles what fragments are worth.

Later passes

Clearing a platter loads the next of five layouts — Platter, Cache, Bus Lanes, Chambers and Grid Blocks — then the set repeats. The processes get faster every pass and the tool holds them for less time. Around pass nine it stops scaring them at all.

Defragging will not fix a modern machine

Windows handles it on its own, and on an SSD it does nothing at all. If your computer is slow the cause is usually somewhere else, and that is worth a proper look.
